When this mom first reached out, she was looking for a family photographer in Connecticut. Her first email asked me if I work with families with older children. She was looking for a fall family session with older kids, and saw a lot of young children on my website. I was so excited that she asked this!
I know that a lot of Connecticut family photographers specialize in young families. But I pride myself on being able to engage and connect with clients of all ages. I was a 5th grade teacher for 10 years, so older children are actually one of my favorite age groups to work with!
CT Family Photographer: Planning the Session
This mom was very glad to hear that and booked me as their CT family photographer. We had to do a lot of coordinating around her children’s busy schedules. But we were finally able to get something on the books for late October. And I swear, we had the last drop of the foliage in our favor. Together, the mom and I selected a location with a lot of variety, so her kids wouldn’t be bored. She came in to try on dresses. She used the conversations that we had to shop for her own dress. I swear, this dress was made for her! It was absolutely perfect for her fall family photo shoot.
The Day of the Session
The day of her session, I was so excited to meet her crew in the parking lot. We got to know one another right away, which I think is so important as a CT family photographer. Especially with older children, they need to like you and trust you .. quick. I think it’s safe to say that happened! We started off with family portraits and then did all of the combinations with the parents and the kids. Again, as a Connecticut family photographer, I think it is so important for each child to have a picture with each parent.
A few minutes into the session, we had more than a handful of inside jokes and were having an absolute blast. We took the session all the way until sunset, laughing and playing games. You know it’s a great session as a CT family photographer when you don’t want it to end!
Advice From a CT Family Photographer
If you are a parent of older children, here is my advice for your fall family pictures. First, listen to what your children want to wear and respect that. If they hate their outfits, they will make sure you know it in every picture. Second, find a CT family photographer that has experience with older children. It makes all the difference in the world. And finally, make it an experience. Plan something fun to do afterwards as a family that your kids are looking forward to. After all, you’re all dressed up – ready to go!
I was so grateful to be the CT family photographer for this awesome family. Next year will be even better, I can’t wait to experience it with them!
