One of my favorite things about my job as a Farmington CT newborn photographer is meeting new families. I first met this family back in 2020. They were due with their older daughter in June. Because of Covid, everyone was on edge about how to safely navigate newborn life. I remember chatting with the mom on the phone and feeling an instant connection. Since their daughter’s newborn session, we have done so many sessions together. I couldn’t be more thankful!
I was so excited when this mom shared with me that she was going to be due with baby #2 in August. While the parents didn’t want to be in the newborn portraits, they did want to get sibling portraits done. As a Farmington CT newborn photographer, I have a lot of experience with making sibling pictures. With this particular family, the older daughter was 2, which is always an added challenge. But we made it happen. I couldn’t be happier with the results!
Farmington CT Newborn Photographer: Session Prep
Before this newborn session, the mom and I selected a dress for her daughter from the Client Closet. I always encourage parents to use neutrals in their sibling portraits to create a timeless, classic look. We chose a white dress for the older sister, with a lot of texture and detail to make the image pop.
Then I requested that the mom complete her newborn questionnaire. This is where you will select the colors you want for your newborn session from my menu of options. Because the baby brother’s nursery was going to be gray, the mom selected gray and navy blue tones. I love that she was thinking ahead to where she would use these images in her home.
Finally, the mom and I discussed my tips and tricks for successful sibling portraits. We always set our expectations low and are ready for anything and everything. Newborn safety is always my number one priority, regardless of the age of the sibling. But there are definitely some tidbits that I share with parents to make sure we get those sibling portraits.
Farmington CT Newborn Photographer: The Day of the Session
On the day of their session, the parents brought their kiddos to the studio. As a Farmington CT newborn photographer, I always do family and sibling portraits first, while everyone is fresh and the studio is a new environment. With the parents’ help, we were able to do three different sets with their two-year old and newborn. That’s definitely a new record, for sure!
After the sibling portraits were done, the father took the daughter home in a separate car. That way, the mom could relax with her son and we could do his individual pictures. Again, I love how thoughtful the mom was in selecting colors for her newborn session. The blues and grays complemented everything so nicely and flowed well together.
Farmington CT Newborn Photographer: Kind Words
As a Farmington CT newborn photographer, I love to get messages like these from parents after they receive their galleries: “I love them all!!!! There are so many good sibling pics! I had low expectations of her cooperating so this is awesome. Thank you, Sharon! See you in the fall!”
