It’s hard to believe that a year has already passed since sweet Emily was born. When it was time to book Emily’s cake smash, her mom told me that she wanted to keep it light and bright. I designed a light and bright cake smash set that brought together all of those elements. Light greens were added for contrast and florals for a feminine look. I was pretty excited with the results, as was Emily’s mom.
Light and Bright Cake Smash: Outfits
When Emily first got to the studio, we chose an outfit for her “clean” portraits before the cake came out from the Client Closet for sitters. She was able to warm up to me and the camera while we got these sweet pictures. That tongue, though! Mom knew that she wouldn’t tolerate a headband for long. We took advantage of her distraction to make it happen.
After the clean portraits were done it was time for cake! While her mom and dad changed Emilly, I grabbed the rustic cake that was baked by Chris from Home Sweet Home bakery in Burlington, CT.
Light and Bright Cake Smash: The Smash
This is the go-to cake that I order from Chris for cake smash sessions for a variety of reasons. First, the cake is nice, but it’s not the focal point of the pictures. I don’t want the cake to distract from your adorable one year old. Also, rustic cakes have minimal frosting. If your child hasn’t had a lot of sugar, a thoroughly frosted cake can be a little more than they’re ready for. Chris’ cakes are so delicious, you really can’t go wrong!
The parents brought Emily’s outfit for the actual cake smash, since Client Closet dresses can’t be worn for the actual smashing of the cake (sometimes frosting doesn’t come out of it). For this light and bright cake smash session, the parents chose a neutral dress with great details that photographed extremely well. Mom purchased this from Amazon in two sizes, which gave us a lot of options. My rule of thumb is to have the outfit fit as snugly as possible.
Cake Smash Expectations
Emily absolutely LOVED her cake. I always warn parents that it may go the opposite way of what you expect (check out the blog post about this here). We thought Miss Emily would be hesitant, but she dove in and was all about the frosting. In less than ten minutes, she had her fill and everyone left the studio happy. The best part for parents? No clean up – I have you covered!
