What To Expect At Your Child’s Cake Smash Session

I was caught off-guard when my family started singing “Happy Birthday” to my daughter on her first birthday. I didn’t realize how overwhelmed I was by the fact that the first year went so darn quick! You are going to love preserving your child’s first birthday with this special session. I am truly honored to be able to share this experience with you. Here is an idea of what to expect at your child’s cake smash session

What To Expect At Your Child’s Cake Smash Session: Before Your Session

When you reach out to discuss your cake smash session, we will chat about your vision for your child’s big day. I will provide you with a questionnaire and a prep guide that will help us talk through your session. This information will also help me to plan set(s) for your session. The session will take place either in the studio or outdoors. I provide everything you need – from props, the set, outfits and of course, the cake. So you don’t have to worry about a thing!

What To Expect At Your Child’s Cake Smash Session: At Your Session

When you arrive at the studio, I will have the set ready for you to see when you first walk in. Then we will jump right into first-year portraits. This is usually in the first outfit that you have picked out. I also fondly know these as the “clean” portraits. The cake will be safely stowed away and we will get some smiley shots of your little one before the cake.

After that, you can choose to change your child into another outfit if you wish for the actual cake smashing part. Then the cake comes out! This can really go one of two ways. Either, your child will have no interest in the cake whatsoever and we may need to model smashing the cake. The other direction it can go is they have lots of interest and we have a fun mess on our hands. It’s always so interesting to see how different kiddos react.

As a parent, be ready for anything! Sometimes, you have to take a bite of the cake for the team. This helps your little one can understand that it’s food. After trying to get them to not be messy so often, it can be confusing when all of a sudden a lady with a camera wants them to make a mess!

After Your Session

One of the best parts of the cake smash session is that you don’t have to clean up! Once we’re done smashing cake, you can be on your way with your little one (probably heading towards the nearest bathtub). I will take care of the rest. Your cake will go home with you for a snack later. In a few days, I will send you the unedited pictures of your little one’s cake smash for you to review. You can pick your favorites to be edited or decide to upgrade your gallery to get all of your images. Within 2 weeks, you will have all of your edited images to share with family and friends for your little one’s big day.
