For families with young children, sunset sessions in the summer can be a challenge. I work closely with parents to find a time that works best for their schedules and with the light. I will explain all of the options when you book your session, and we will make it work! This sweet family of three had the best summer field family session in August. Simsbury provided the perfect backdrop and was a change from Topsmead, where we captured this family’s memories the year before.
I first met this family a year ago when they wanted to capture outdoor family memories with their infant son. We had a blast at their sunset session at Topsmead. I was so excited to work with them again this year!
The mom opted to use the Client Closet to dress her family. She came to the studio for a dress consult and we selected a color palette, based on her preferences. She knew that her husband would only be comfortable in sneakers and shorts, so we embraced it and went with it. Mom selected this gorgeous dress from the Client Closet. She sent me several screenshots of options she found for her young son online. Together, we selected the outfit that worked best, then planned dad’s shirt color based on the white and light blue colors of the other outfits.
Because the summer field family session was scheduled for later in the day and we knew we were bumping up on bedtime, the family trusted me with the workflow. We followed the lead of their one-year old son and made sure to get the “Christmas card photo” at the beginning of the session. I always do this, to guarantee that we get that great shot that Grandma and Grandpa want to hang on their wall. After we have that, we know we can start to play!
This family was up for anything at their summer field family session. We got a few images of Mom and Dad together and prioritized their interactions with their son.
One funny thing that happened at this summer field family session was I accidentally left my crate behind. We got a great image of their son, sitting on the crate in the corn field. I got distracted immediately after as he ran over to his mom, and I accidentally walked away from the crate. I actually didn’t notice until I was packing for a session the next day. I panicked when I realized it, because I LOVE that crate – it works for all the things. Luckily, my session was at this same Simsbury location and IT WAS THERE! I did an absolute happy dance in the field and was so grateful (as was my husband, who knew we would have to haunt a lot of antique shops to find the replacement).
Anyway, back to the summer field family session! We wrapped up the evening in the sunflowers that just so happened to be in bloom at that time. It was the perfect ending to the perfect summer evening. And even better? There’s a great ice cream spot right up the road, so the family headed over for after-session treats – always the best way to end a fun family evening!
