Some sessions stand out not just for the images we capture, but for the meaning behind the location. This session was such a special experience. When this mom reached out about booking her family’s annual portraits, she told me she wanted something a little different. Instead of a mini session, she was ready for the full Sharon Leger Photography experience. And I couldn’t wait to help her bring her vision to life. This was the first time we planned a horse farm photo shoot. I have to admit, it turned out even better than I imagined.
From Mini Sessions to the Full Experience
I first met this family at one of my field mini sessions several years ago. Every year since then, they’ve booked a seasonal mini to keep their family photos up to date. Watching their family grow over time has been such a treat.
This year, when Mom said she was ready to do something different, I was thrilled. She wanted to go all in. She wanted a full family session with the works. This experience includes a dress consultation, professional hair and makeup, and a location that was deeply personal to her family. When she mentioned that she boards her horse locally, I knew this would be something special. A horse farm photo shoot is such a unique way to blend family portraits with an environment that truly feels like home.

Preparing for a New Location
Because Rose Meadow Stables was a new location for me, I suggested that we meet ahead of time to scout the property together. This is something I love doing for new spots, especially when we’re working with young children. It allows me to get a sense of the layout, light, and best backdrops. That helps me create an efficient shooting plan in advance.
When we met at the stables, the evening light was beautiful, the grounds were open and green, and I could instantly see how well this location would photograph. Scouting ahead meant that on the day of the actual session, we could move quickly and make the most of our time — no wandering, no guesswork, and no losing the kids’ attention.
A little preparation goes a long way in making sessions relaxed and stress-free.

The Dress Consultation
As with all of my full sessions, we scheduled a dress consultation at my studio in Canton, Connecticut. Mom brought along a few favorite pieces from her own closet, and we worked together to map out the full wardrobe for the entire family.
Even though she didn’t pull dresses from my Client Closet this time, the consultation was still so helpful. We were able to see everything laid out together, identify what was missing, and fill in the gaps with simple additions that tied the whole look together.
We also talked through all the small details that make a big difference — things like shoes that work well for walking on grass, layering options in case the evening turned chilly, and backup outfits for the kids. These are the little things that often go overlooked, but planning them out ahead of time helps everything run smoothly.

Session Day at the Farm
On the day of the session, Mom had her hair and makeup done by my in-studio artist, who even traveled to her home to make the day as stress-free as possible. When we arrived at the farm, everyone was relaxed, ready, and excited to get started.
The horses were already curious, peeking their heads out of the barn as if they knew they were about to be part of the show. We worked with Mom’s horse trainer to make sure we could safely include her horse in the portraits while keeping everything calm and organized.
My favorite part of the evening was when I noticed all the other horses watching us from the barn windows — they looked so intrigued, trying to figure out what was going on out in the field. It made the whole session feel even more magical.

Capturing Connection in a Meaningful Place
When families choose a location that’s meaningful to them, it changes everything about the energy of the session. You can feel the comfort, the ease, and the natural connection that comes from being in a place that matters to you.
That’s exactly what made this Horse Farm Photo Shoot so memorable. This wasn’t just a pretty backdrop — it was a setting that told their story. The kids were familiar with the space, Mom was completely in her element, and the love they share for their horses added such a unique, authentic touch to the images.
We started with classic family portraits, then moved into more candid moments — the kids playing near the paddock, Mom sharing a quiet moment with her horse, and the family walking along the fence line as the sun dipped behind the trees. Every image felt personal and meaningful.
Why a Custom Session Is Worth It
I love mini sessions — they’re quick, efficient, and perfect for families who want updated photos throughout the year. But full sessions like this one allow for a deeper, more personalized experience.
With a full session, we can take our time, explore multiple spots within a location, and capture those small, unscripted moments that unfold naturally. You’ll have access to my stylist, Client Closet, and professional hair and makeup artist, so you can feel completely confident from start to finish. If you’ve ever thought about booking something more custom — whether that’s a Horse Farm Photo Shoot, a session at your lake house, or simply a place that holds special meaning to your family — I would love to help bring your vision to life.
The Best Sessions Start With You

This farm session was a perfect example of what happens when we collaborate — a beautiful location, thoughtful styling, and a relaxed family that felt completely at home.
