After the Covid lockdown, I began to get more and more bookings for extended family sessions than ever before. As a CT extended family photographer, I could not be more thrilled about it. Suddenly, families were very aware of how much they wanted to capture memories together. Before Covid, this family had asked me about booking a CT extended family photo shoot. They had family coming in from out-of-state, so it would need to be planned well in advance. Then Covid happened. This past year, we were finally able to make the CT extended family session happen. It made my CT extended family photographer so happy to see how much this family loves one another.
Planning a Fall Extended Family Session
Probably the most challenging thing about booking a CT extended family session is deciding on extended family photo outfits. The mom and grandmother booked a dress consultation with me to help prepare. They tried on a few dresses to help us chat about style and colors. It helped that they had also created a Pinterest board of ideas. Because the mom is a long-time client of mine, she knows her process well for choosing family photo shoot outfits. She encouraged her mother-in-law to go shopping. From there, they would put outfits on a bed to see what looked good together. Honestly, it is the best advice I could give as a CT extended family photographer!
That is exactly what they did. Their extended family photo outfits were perfect! When they arrived at the location the day of their extended family session, I introduced myself to the members of the family that were new to me. We discussed the game plan. As a CT extended family photographer, I know how important communication is. I make it clear from the start that I will coordinate everything. No one has to worry about posing themselves, or crowd control. That is my superpower as a CT extended family photographer.
Topsmead State Forest Extended Family Session
We started off at a location with a lot of foliage. That was something that was very important to this family. We started with all of the pictures where family members are smiling at the camera. I do this as a CT extended family photographer for a variety of reasons. First, we get these priority pictures done right off the bat. Second, I am able to see how everyone feels in front of the camera. Does that person feel awkward? Does that child not know where to put their hands? It gives me a sense of how much direction each client needs. And finally, when I show you the back of the camera, you will get excited. This will help to ease nerves and get you excited for the experience to come.
After these initial fall extended family portraits, we switched locations. I do a few location switches at extended family sessions to get everyone moving and chatting. The change of location can help a lot with children’s focus, as well. After our first location, this is where the posing gets kicked up a notch. As an experienced CT extended family photographer, this is where we will get the candid shots. So many families ask for this in their questionnaire. It is important to remember that those “candid photos” still require some direction. That is where I come in and work my magic.
I am absolutely honored that this family chose me as their CT extended family photographer. Their images are priceless and I get goosebumps thinking about future generations having them.
