CT Family Photographer: Session Prep
This family is no exception. The mom booked her CT summer photo shoot in November, the year before. That allowed her to get on my calendar and get a Black Friday discount. Win, win! About three months before her session, I sent her my calendar. She chose a date that worked best for her and her family. We went back and forth a few times about locations. As your CT family photographer, I will provide you with a list of my favorite locations to photograph in Connecticut.
The mom was interested in booking a session at a CT bridge. However, we weren’t sure how her twin boys would do at such a small location. In our brainstorming session, the mom suggested their favorite location – a nearby lake where they had a boat. We decided to go for it. I always love when we can make a sentimental location work out as a CT family photographer.
When we were planning summer family picture outfits, we talked about not accidentally looking like a sailor family. The colors the mom wanted to use were navy and white. It is easy to see how that could accidentally look too matchy-matchy or like they were trying really hard. We worked together, looked at pictures and the mom pulled together the best summer family picture outfits.
Lake Family Session
Whenever I arrive at a new location, I spend the first few minutes scouting around. As a CT family photographer, I am scouting the light and thinking through a posing workflow. We knew we were going to be using the boat, but I wanted to capture moments on the dock as well. It was a perfectly overcast day, which the mom was nervous about. But as we walked by a fisherman on the dock, he congratulated us for having the perfect lighting situation on the lake. I love when other people recognize this! It definitely made the mom feel better to hear it from myself and someone else.
Before we knew it, we were on the boat and taking off. I was nervous that we would run out of options real quick. But honestly, the family is so much fun, it was a breeze. We were able to stop the boat in the middle of the lake and get family photos. When we were chatting, the parents mentioned that where I asked them to stop was exactly in front of a lake house they were in the running for. What a coincidence! We were sure to get pictures of the house in the background. Again, I love being able to incorporate these elements whenever possible. It makes the final images so much more meaningful for the family.
Now, I am so excited for my next lake family session. Anyone have a boat?!
