August is hands-down my favorite time of year to photograph senior portraits—and Ava’s CT outdoor senior session at Topsmead State Forest in Litchfield was the perfect example of why.
Between the golden light, the relaxed energy before school starts, and the extra time for outfit changes, August checks all the boxes for a dreamy senior session. For Ava’s session, we had everything: beautiful weather, a stunning wardrobe, and a family full of laughter and love that made this session unforgettable.
Why August Is the Ideal Month for Senior Portraits
There’s something magical about late summer sessions. The lighting is warm and golden, the sunsets are long and soft, and seniors haven’t yet been swept up in the busyness of senior year. This means less stress, more flexibility with scheduling, and plenty of time to meet yearbook deadlines.
For Ava’s CT outdoor senior session, we had the freedom to take our time, capture a variety of looks, and even chase the sunset to the top of the hill. The result? A gallery full of variety, style, and emotion.

Two Outfit Changes, One Pop-Up Tent, and a Lot of Style
Ava brought two outfit changes for her session, and we used my handy pop-up tent to make quick changes without needing to leave the location. I always recommend a mix of dressy and casual looks for senior portraits—something timeless, something fun, and something that feels just like you.
Her style choices were perfect for the natural setting of Topsmead. From garden paths to wide-open fields, Ava’s outfits complemented the scenery beautifully and gave us a ton of visual variety.
A Full-Circle Moment at Topsmead
This wasn’t my first time photographing Ava’s family at Topsmead—we actually did a family session there about five years ago! Coming back to this space with the same family, now celebrating a huge milestone, was so special.
Ava’s parents joined us for the session, and I can’t overstate how fun it was to have them there. We laughed a ton (especially while re-naming photos on the fly), and the energy from this family made the evening even more memorable.
It’s those little behind-the-scenes moments—the shared smiles, the proud parents, the genuine joy—that make a CT outdoor senior session so meaningful.

Ending on a Hilltop with Golden Light
We started Ava’s session in the gardens and fields, using the lush summer greenery as our backdrop. As the sun dipped lower, we made our way up to the top of the hill to catch the sunset—and wow, did it deliver.
Golden light spilled across the landscape, highlighting Ava’s features and creating the dreamy glow that every photographer lives for. It was the perfect way to wrap up a senior session filled with warmth, laughter, and light.

Planning Your Own CT Outdoor Senior Session? Here Are My Top Tips:
Whether you’re a rising senior or the proud parent of one, here’s how to make the most of your experience:
Choose your season:
Summer and fall are my favorite times for senior portraits. Summer has longer light and more flexibility, while fall brings color and coziness.
Plan your outfits:
I recommend one dressy look, one semi-dressy, and one casual outfit to show off your personality and give variety to your final gallery.
Pick the right location:
Look for places with diverse backdrops—gardens, fields, architecture, or trails. Topsmead is one of my favorites for this reason.
Find a photographer who fits your style:
Your senior photos should feel authentic and timeless. Working with someone whose aesthetic you love makes all the difference.
Ava’s CT outdoor senior session checked every one of these boxes. I couldn’t be more grateful to her and her family for trusting me to document such an important milestone. I’m already excited to see what the future holds for her!
