When we did this family’s maternity session on the beach, I had a vision for coming back to do their son’s first birthday portraits on the beach. Luckily, when I mentioned it to the parents, they were all in. A beach cake smash? What’s not to love?! As a CT cake smash photographer, I love to get creative with cake smash themes and ideas. And I especially love when things come full circle, like doing first year portraits in the same place as maternity portraits.
CT Cake Smash Photographer: Planning Your Session
When we were planning the beach cake smash, the mom and I agreed that the colors would be light blue and white. She had two cute outfits selected for her son. We knew that we wanted to incorporate family portrait into the session as well. We chatted about different options and decided to do the family portraits very dressy, then get casual on the beach. This was my first time doing a cake smash on the beach as a CT cake smash photographer, so I wasn’t sure what to expect (other than sand!).
The Beach Cake Smash Session
The night that we chose for the beach cake smash was perfection. It was during the week so that we didn’t have to battle a lot of traffic. We began with family portraits in the garden and by the mansion at Harkness Park. I loved that the parents chose to be a part of the first birthday portraits. And not only that, but their outfits were absolutely perfect and made for great family portraits to hang in their home.
Then, everyone got re-dressed into their more casual outfits down by the beach. We grabbed a few more family portraits before we hit the sand. It was hilarious watching this little guy tear into his cake on the beach. There were definitely a lot of sensory things going on, between the icing and the sand. But he had no worries in the world, digging into his cake! We got to watch the sunset on the beach and it was the most perfect CT beach cake smash session.
I am truly honored that this family booked my first year collection. This allowed me to capture this little guy’s maternity, newborn, sitter and cake smash sessions. I could not be more grateful to them!
