A CT maternity session is such an exciting way to prepare and celebrate the upcoming arrival of your little bundle of joy. Documenting this milestone provides you with pictures of a fleeting time that you will always remember and treasure. Imagine your baby as an adult, looking back on these pictures. Perhaps they look at them when they are expecting themselves. These images will give them a glimpse into your life during this special time. When preparing for your maternity session, here are some things to think about:
Maternity Session Wardrobe
For maternity sessions, I encourage clients to wear neutral, classic clothing that is comfortable. These pictures are going to be a part of your family’s history. You want to look back and remember the special time, not be appalled at how short your dress was.
Definitely feel free to send pictures in advance to your photographer to get their feedback. You may also want to have a back-up outfit in case your size fluctuates between the purchase of your outfit and your session date. Finally, you also may want to consider an second outfit. This will add variety to your gallery.
Pampering Session
A maternity session is the perfect time to make a hair and make-up appointment. After 30 weeks, you’re usually not feeling like your best self or confident in your body. A little extra pampering can go a long way in making you feel like you look your best for this session!
Maternity Session Posing
The BUMP is the only big difference between a couples’ session and a maternity session. In all of my maternity sessions, I encourage both the mom and the dad to have at least one hand on the bump at all times. This helps to make it super clear that there is a baby in there. But don’t worry. Even if family members are being incorporated into the session, I will make sure to do a set with just mom. This gives her a quiet moment in the spotlight before quiet moments are a distant memory (like sleeping!).
Props
You never want to go overboard with props, especially in maternity sessions. The bump needs to be the star of the show. That being said, you may want to think about incorporating small details. These details can include an ultrasound picture, a little pair of shoes or something monogrammed to add variety to your gallery. Pro tip: be sure to let your photographer know if the name is a secret!.
So when preparing for your maternity shoot, think about what you want to wear in the pictures, whether or not you want to get your hair and make-up done ahead of time, plan any props you may want to have along and be aware that the posing may be slightly different than your typical session. And of course, always reach out to me as well with any questions or concerns you have.
