There’s something special about photographing families at the beach. The light, the movement, and the relaxed energy – it’s truly the best. This Harkness Park fall beach family session was the perfect combination of all of those things.
I first met this family at one of my Personality Portrait events. I knew right away that we were a perfect fit. The parents noticed how naturally I connected with their kids during that event. They loved how relaxed and engaged their children felt in front of the camera. So, when it came time to plan their next family session, they reached out to me to schedule something special. The beach in September was their first choice!
Planning the Session
From the start, Mom was excited about styling and wanted her family’s outfits to look cohesive and elevated. She decided to come into my Canton, CT studio for a dress consultation. With my studio stylist, she explored options from my Client Closet.
Together, we planned a look that would feel timeless, flattering, and easy to move in. We needed to find options that were perfect for both the gardens and the beach. Mom fell in love with a flowy, neutral-toned dress that photographed beautifully. She was thrilled that she didn’t have to stress about finding something on her own.
One of the best parts about my Client Closet is that it takes the guesswork out of wardrobe planning. When Mom mentioned how grateful she was to have access to it, I completely understood. It truly allows you to focus on enjoying your session instead of worrying about what to wear. She only had to think about coordinating outfits for her husband and sons, which made the process simple and stress-free.
To complete her look, Mom also had her hair and makeup professionally done ahead of time. That always adds that extra touch of confidence and polish that really shines through in her portraits.

Choosing Two Beautiful Looks
Because her boys are a bit older, we decided to make the most of our time at the park and include two outfit changes. The first half of the session took place in the gardens, where the greenery and late-fall blooms added color and texture to the images.
This part of the evening gave us the opportunity to capture those classic, smiling-at-the-camera portraits that grandparents love, along with some candid family interactions. The boys were relaxed and laughing, and you could tell how comfortable they were being photographed.
After that, the family changed into their second outfits for the beach portion of the session. I always recommend this for families with older children because it adds variety to your gallery and lets you mix up the mood — the first look might be elegant and timeless, while the second is casual and natural.
The shift from the garden to the beach created a beautiful flow to the session, and the colors transitioned perfectly as the light started to soften toward sunset.

The Perfect Fall Evening at Harkness Park
There’s a reason Harkness Park is one of my favorite Connecticut session locations. It offers the best of both worlds — lush gardens, beautiful architecture, and a serene beach with stunning sunset views. It’s especially magical in the fall when the crowds are gone, the air feels crisp, and the golden-hour light glows a little warmer.
The evening of this Harkness Park fall beach family session couldn’t have been more perfect. We had mild weather, a glowing sunset, and the kind of light that photographers dream about. The family arrived relaxed and ready to have fun, which made everything flow naturally.
With families who have energetic boys, the key is to keep the session moving — both literally and creatively. We mixed up the poses frequently, played games, and gave the kids opportunities to run, laugh, and explore. It keeps everyone happy and ensures that their personalities come through in the photos.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was watching how connected they were as a family. Between the laughter, the little in-between moments, and the playful energy, their gallery ended up filled with images that feel alive and full of personality.

Ending the Session at the Beach
As the sun began to set, we headed down to the water for the last part of the session. The sky turned shades of pink, orange, and soft purple — the kind of colors that make you pause for a moment just to take it all in.
The family kicked off their shoes, walked along the shoreline, and splashed a little in the waves. I always love ending beach sessions this way because it helps families relax completely and just enjoy the moment together. The boys, of course, had a blast, and the photos from this part of the session are some of my favorites — natural, candid, and full of movement.
At the very end, the family decided to wade into the water, and it made for such fun, memorable images. You could tell they were having a great time, and that genuine connection translated beautifully into their final gallery. This Harkness Park fall beach family session was one of those evenings where everything came together perfectly — the light, the location, and the family’s energy.

Why You’ll Love a Fall Beach Session
A lot of families think of the beach as a summer-only location, but fall sessions at Harkness Park are some of the best. Here’s why:
• The crowds are gone, so you have the space all to yourself.
• The weather is comfortable and not too hot for little ones.
• The light is incredible — softer, warmer, and ideal for glowing portraits.
• The natural tones of the season complement neutral wardrobes beautifully.
If your family loves the beach but doesn’t love the heat or crowds, a fall session might be the perfect fit. The atmosphere feels calm and relaxed, and the photos have that golden, cinematic look that everyone loves.
