There’s just something special about field family photos — the way the light glows, the way families naturally connect, and the way those golden tones feel timeless no matter the season.
Field minis are some of my favorite sessions to photograph because of their simplicity. There’s nothing complicated about them — no elaborate props or setups, just your family, soft natural light, and a beautiful open space. The result? Clean, classic portraits that you can hang in your home all year long.
Whether you’re updating your gallery wall, creating holiday cards, or just capturing your family as you are right now, field minis are a perfect choice for relaxed, genuine, and joy-filled photos.
Why I Love Field Minis
When people ask me why I love photographing in open fields, I always say it’s because they create the perfect backdrop for connection.
The focus is completely on you — your family’s laughter, your hugs, your playful moments. There’s something about being outside in an open space that makes everyone relax a little more. Kids can move, parents can breathe, and everyone just feels a little lighter.
For field family photos, the natural textures — tall grass, wildflowers, and soft evening light — add just the right amount of visual interest without ever stealing attention away from your family. These images feel timeless, organic, and full of emotion.
And the best part? You can hang them in your home year-round. Because the colors and tones are neutral and natural, they fit beautifully in any space or season.

A Natural Backdrop That’s Hard to Beat
I love that every field session feels slightly different depending on the season and the light. Early summer brings bright greens and wildflowers, while late summer and early fall bring those rich, warm tones that look so stunning on camera.
The sun sets perfectly over the fields in Burlington, Connecticut during the summer months, creating that golden-hour magic that photographers dream about. The glow wraps around your family like a warm blanket, giving your portraits that soft, luminous look that everyone loves. There’s truly nothing quite like the backdrop of a summer field for capturing connection, laughter, and love. Field family photos never go out of style — they’re timeless for a reason.

A Few Things to Know About Field Minis
Of course, like anything that involves the great outdoors, there are a few things to keep in mind when planning your session.
1. Connecticut weather can be unpredictable!
Summer pop-up thunderstorms are a thing here, and as much as I wish I could control the weather, sometimes Mother Nature has other plans. If a storm rolls in, don’t worry — we’ll work together to find the best new date. Flexibility is key, and I promise it’s always worth the wait for that perfect light.
2. Simple outfits are your best friend.
For field family photos, you don’t need to overthink outfits! Light, neutral tones and soft fabrics photograph beautifully against the natural greens and golds of the field. Think breezy dresses, linen shirts, and simple textures. You also don’t need to worry about layers — less is more when it comes to keeping things clean and comfortable.
3. The heat isn’t as bad as you think.
Even though summer days can get toasty, by the time we meet for your session, the sun is lower in the sky and the temperatures have dropped quite a bit. I also send every family my favorite tips and tricks for staying cool and comfortable — from hydration reminders to quick-cool hacks for little ones.
4. Late sunsets = later bedtimes.
Because the sun sets later in Burlington during the summer, sessions typically start around golden hour — which means your kiddos might be up a little past their usual bedtime. But I promise, they’ll be having so much fun that they won’t even notice!
I build games and prompts into every session so kids stay engaged, laughing, and moving. It feels more like playtime than posing, and parents always tell me afterward that their kids had a blast.
5. Be tick-aware, not tick-afraid.
It’s true — tall grass in Connecticut can mean ticks, but don’t let that scare you away. These days, ticks can even show up in short grass, so it’s less about where you are and more about being proactive. I always remind families to do a quick tick check before bed after their session — it’s a good habit no matter where you’ve been playing outdoors.
Your safety is always a priority, and I make sure our chosen field locations are well-maintained and beautiful for families.

What Makes Field Family Photos So Special
There’s an ease and honesty to field sessions that makes them some of my favorites to photograph. Without the distractions of a busy location or complex backdrop, the focus stays right where it should — on your family’s connection.
I love watching parents laugh with their kids, siblings run through the grass, and little ones explore the world around them. Every moment feels natural and authentic. As a photographer, my goal is to create images that feel like you. Not stiff, not overly posed — just joyful, genuine portraits that reflect who your family really is. That’s what makes field family photos so magical: they’re simple, timeless, and completely personal.

Why Families Love Their Field Mini Galleries
After each field mini session, families often tell me that their photos feel light, bright, and easy to display anywhere in their home. The clean color palette and soft golden light make these images feel beautiful in every season.
They’re perfect for large wall prints, gallery frames, or even a yearly photo book — the kind of portraits that never feel dated.
And because field minis are quick and easy, they’re ideal for busy families who still want something meaningful. You don’t have to block off half your day or worry about wardrobe chaos. Just show up, laugh, play, and let me take care of the rest.
