One of the sweetest parts of being a photographer is meeting brand-new families at the very beginning of their journey—and that’s exactly what made this session so special. This beautiful trio was new to me and found me on social media. From the first message, I knew we were going to create something lovely together.
Their session took place in my cozy Connecticut newborn portrait studio in Canton, and everything from the wardrobe to the color palette came together effortlessly. The result? A relaxed, joy-filled session that felt as calm as it looked—and portraits that I know this family will treasure for years to come.
Planning the Wardrobe: Letting the Client Closet Do the Work
When it comes to planning a newborn session, I truly believe less stress equals better results. That’s one of the reasons I created my complimentary Client Closet—so that postpartum moms don’t have to think about what to wear during one of the most tender (and exhausting!) times of their lives.
For this session, I worked closely with Mom to pick out a dress from my curated collection. She chose one of my most popular pieces for new moms—a soft, flowing, postpartum-friendly dress that photographs beautifully and feels comfortable. The best part? All she and Dad had to do was bring an outfit for him, and I took care of the rest.
The final palette was neutral and soft with warm undertones that complemented the studio’s natural light and organic textures. It was the perfect match for this family and worked beautifully for both color and black-and-white images.

Why I Built My Connecticut Newborn Portrait Studio With Families in Mind
My Connecticut newborn portrait studio was designed with new parents in mind. From the soft seating and clean, minimalist aesthetic to the comforting pace of the session, my goal is to make the experience feel calm and unrushed. Babies need time for feeding and snuggling, and parents need space to breathe and enjoy these fleeting moments.
When I built my Client Closet, I specifically focused on dresses that would photograph beautifully on a variety of body types and be flattering for moms in the early postpartum weeks. I keep a full range of sizes in stock, and everything is chosen with comfort and confidence in mind. I want every mom to walk into my studio and feel taken care of—because you are.
Session Flow: Keep It Simple and Trust the Process
My best tip for families preparing for their newborn session? Don’t overplan.
This family did a fantastic job trusting me to guide the session. We started with family portraits first—always my recommendation—so that once we were finished, Mom and Dad could sit back and relax while I worked with their baby boy.
Newborn sessions flow best when there’s room for flexibility. Sometimes baby needs an extra feed. Sometimes they want to be held for a bit longer before they settle into a pose. It’s all part of the process. My job is to create a peaceful, baby-led experience that results in images you love.
Another helpful tip? Choose a color palette you genuinely love. These portraits may live in your home for years to come, so selecting tones that fit your aesthetic (and home décor) will help you enjoy your images even more.

More Than a Photo Session—A Connection
One of the things I loved most about this session was getting to know these new parents. In between poses and feedings, we chatted about their new life with a baby, favorite spots in town, and resources for growing families.
Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work with several wonderful local organizations that support families through pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood. I was happy to pass along a few recommendations and contacts—they’re part of the beautiful community I’ve come to know and love as a photographer in Canton, Connecticut.
