How to Accessorize For Your Session

Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite part of wardrobe planning – the accessories! To me, adding accessories is the frosting on the cake. Or maybe the sprinkles? Either way, it’s the most exciting part to bring your session to the next level. Here are some of my best tips for how to accessorize for your session.

What exactly does accessorizing for your session mean? The next time you walk by a store like J. Crew or Banana Republic, you’ll notice the mannequins and models are oftentimes wearing a statement necklace or a hat in addition to their coordinated outfit. Adding a few well placed accessories (on all the family members) will bring additional dimension and visual interest to your photos.

So what does accessorizing for a family session look like? My favorite part about accessorizing is that you can quickly and easily change out the layers if needed, or desired, to create a different look.

How to Accessorize For Your Session: Hats

Not everyone can pull off hats, but if you can – you should! I love adding hats as an accessory because they are so easy to add in and out. It allows for a nice variety to your gallery. Be sure that the brim isn’t too large that it obstructs your face, and you’re good to go!

Jewelry

This is probably my favorite way to accessorize a session. Statement necklaces or bracelets are a fun way to help draw the “X” you are trying to achieve with your wardrobe. Be careful to not overdo this, but one statement necklace really adds a lot of fun to your wardrobe.

How to Accessorize For Your Session: Ties

The guys aren’t going to be left out of the accessorizing game! Ties are a great way to add an element of sophistication to your session. I always remind clients that the pictures you usually post on social media or in your home are the ones where everyone is dressed up. So add a tie with a blazer and you have won the game!

Outdoor Gear

A lot of these accessories are best used for sessions in the warmer months, But winter brings with it it’s own accessories. Hats, gloves and scarves can add a little pop to your winter session. And bonus? They help keep you warm!

Shoes (Or Lack Thereof)

Thinking about winter was scary, so let’s go back to summer vibes! Shoes can be another great detail to accessorize your session. Yes, you can wear simple nude pumps that are subtle, but you also could add the vibrant heels that are in your closet that you thought were going to change your life one day. The day has arrived!

On the flip side, if you’re rocking a casual summer family session, barefoot may also be the best accessory. And who needs and excuse for a pedicure?!

How to Accessorize For Your Session: Hair Accessories

If you have a little girl in your session, hair accessories are another fun way to accessorize. All you need to do is walk through Claire’s at the mall and see miles and miles of options. Hair barrettes and headbands can provide endless options as far as colors and styles go. If you have a little one (a year or younger), turbans are also a super cute touch that you can only get away with for a little while.

A Final Note About Accessorizing for Your Session

Don’t be afraid to get a little creative with accessories! I have a family that makes sure their dogs have matching collars at every session. It seems like such a small detail, but it makes such a big difference. That being said, there is too much of a good thing, so be careful to be strategic. 2-3 strong accessories will be a perfect balance to your coordinated wardrobe.
