When I mentioned to my mom that I would be shooting a Fresh 48 session, her first reaction was: “What the heck is that?” These sessions are definitely a newer trend (thanks, Pinterest!). A photographer comes to the hospital to help you document the first few hours of your child’s life. A lot of parents are confident that they want maternity and newborn sessions. But how do you decide if a Fresh 48 is right for you?
The Fresh 48 Experience
Anyone who has gone through the experience of childbirth knows that when someone shows up with a camera on your first day of motherhood, you want to slam the door in their face. Even Carrie questioned her choice when I showed up and started unpacking my equipment. But, after they were able to see the pictures, even just a few days later, they were amazed at the little things that they had forgotten about or had completely not noticed in the haze of those early days.
These sessions, while extremely rewarding, come with a unique set of challenges. These challenges are both for the clients and the photographer. Birth is an exhausting experience and the thought of someone taking your picture may be the last thing you want to do. However, know that photographers with experience with Fresh 48 sessions can work around this and will be able to pose you in a way that you can feel confident. I strongly believe that your hospital stay after giving birth is all about learning, recovering, and bonding with your newborn. You will see that in my shooting style. I will work around the often chaotic room, making sure to not interfere with any of these priorities while capturing irreplaceable images for your family that will last a lifetime.
